Natural Heritage Status: Ulu Kenas Recreational Forest is rich in flora and fauna of tropical rainforest. The main forest type is Hill Dipterocarp Forest. Others include Dipterocarp palm forest, upper hill dipterocarp forest, oak-laurel forest and montane ericaceous forest. The park is a popular mountain climbing destination of Gunung Bubu (1657m). Sungai Kenas flows through the park. The park is situated within Bubu Forest Reserve. The park is home to many endemic plants and wild herbs found in the upper reaches of the park. Shady keruing neram (Dipterocarpus Oblongifolia) trees on the river banks provide scenic and panoramic view of the cascading river.

Present status as recreational forest. The 20 ha park which was previously logged was gazetted as Ulu Kenas Recreational Forest in 1990. Situated within compartment 26A and 27A of Bubu Forest Reserve.

Accessibility: To the park: Tarred road suitable for all vehicles to the park. Use the Kuala Kangsar to Manong main road and turn into the park at Kampung Ulu Kenas. Public transport available along Kuala Kangsar – Manong road. Visitors using bus need to walk for 2 km to the park from the main road. A taxi can be hired from Kuala Kangsar or Ipoh.

A National Development Camp (Kem Bina Negara) is within the park complex. Kampung Ulu Kenas is a small village 2km at the entrance to the park.
Accommodation facilities available for park visitors. Several food stores open daily for the convenient of visitors in the park.
Proper infrastructures including a hanging bridge adds to the landscape to provide easy accessibility to visitors. Other facilities include rest shades, chalet, campsites, hall and washrooms.

Popularity:Popular during public holiday. The park was well patronized and a popular recreational destination among the local community. Foreign tourists can also be seen in the park. Kenas river flows through the park with clean water and cascading pools for bathing and picnicking. It was estimated that during festival, there were at least 2 thousand visitors. Weekend like Saturday and Sunday about 500 visitors. While normal weekday as low as 100 visitors. (Estimate figures provided by park ranger)
Campers have to apply for permission from the district forestry office before they were allowed to camp inside the park.
For the adventurous, the park is a popular head start to scale Gunung Bubu (1,657 m) through the hill dipterocarp forest. You will be attracted to the flora and fauna found in the forest.

Threats: The biggest threat of the park is garbage disposal. Rubbish was seen strewn in the park and along trails and campsites to Mt. Bubu. Rubbish bins available could not cater to the volume of visitors.
Evident of poaching can be seen with empty cartridges found along trails.

Mitigation:
Enforcement by the park authority and provide more rubbish bins at strategic areas. Registration of hikers and declaration of food packages brought in by hikers scaling Mt Bubu should be enforced to prevent the huge garbage left in the mountain. This mitigation was very successful in the Taman Negara and Gunung Ledang.
A small parking fee could elevate the carrying capacity of the park.

How to Get There
Ulu Kenas Recreational Forest is 15km from Kuala Kangsar using the Kuala Kangsar – Manong road and 45km from Ipoh. Using North-South Expressway NSE (E1), exit at Kuala Kangsar. Head towards Kuala Kangsar town. As you reach Kuala Kangsar town, look for road sign to Manong, Kem Bina Negara or Ulu Kenas Recreational Forest using Route A3. Some 15 km from Kuala Kangsar you will come to Ulu Kenas village. Turn right into Ulu Kenas Recreational Forest which is about 2 km from the main road.
